New Year's Day

So, I'm married now!

It was a very fitting ceremony: funny, quick, entertaining, and surrounded by friends, family, and derby girls. The bride walked down the aisle barefoot to Mr. Blue Sky, and the preacher played his part wonderfully, reenacting the marriage scene from The Princess Bride:

Seriously. It's good to hear a large group of people erupt in laughter before the vows are officially taken. Which were, and I'm not kidding:

"Do you?"
"I do!"
"And you?"
"Yep!"
"Then, you are! Congratulations!"

The whole ceremony was under 2 minutes. Then, we had a massive party for many hours before my new bride and myself went off to spend a lovely evening away from everything.

Oh! And we got quite possibly the best, most awesomest wedding gift ever from our friend (and fellow derby ref), Rumble StilsKin, who - my god, had better be thinking about further pursuing his doodles more:

Photobucket

Holy crap! Is that great or what? He nailed both of us!

Enjoy the new year, everyone! I know I will!

Guess who's getting hitched on New Year's Day?!

I've had a busy, wonderful time away from the blog. Thanks, everyone!

Extra, EXTRA thanks to Mr. Popular for the AWESOME gift!

...and 1/1/11 is an anniversary date even my crappy memory won't soon forget!

You got your dinosaurs all over my derby!

So Mr. Popular just finished the poster for our next bout, which, if I'm not mistaken, he will be attending. And staying with us while he's in town. Check it out:

I like to think that the otherwise unexplainable dinosaur motif is something in the way of couch-sleeping compensation. Lord knows it confused the derby girls...

Great job!

Behold!

The Greatest Poster in Roller Derby History*!!

Man, that's positively Dëthklöckian!

(* apologies, of course to Mr. Popular, who - I think - would agree with me.)

When Zombie Attack, Wise Man Get Shotgun.

From the genius that brought you "Rise and Fall of the Nazi Dinosaurs," comes the next greatest thing ever...

Zoo of the Dead!

I love this guy. We have remarkably similar tastes...

(heh. Zombie pun.)

Bizarro! A Homage

[This was something I've meant to write about for a while, but Rachelle's challenge to write about your favorite comic shop pushed it to the forefront. Well, at least until after I got over my Freakazoid bender, anyway.]

Several years ago I moved from Georgia to Idaho, and quite honestly, I love it out here. Take today, for example: It's a pleasant 70 degrees, nice friendly breeze, clear skies, and I can see a really majestic mountain range (that still has the remains of last winter's snow covering the tallest peaks) right through the window as I'm typing this. The people are plain-spoken, no-nonsense and very friendly. They look at me funny if I slip into my (slight) southern accent. Usually that involves alcohol. And you can buy that on Sundays out here. Another plus.

Yes, I moved here and for the most part I didn't look back... except ... you see, I'm convinced that I moved away from the Planet's Greatest Comic Shop: Athens Georgia's Bizarro Wuxtry.

(that link is hardly representative, but there doesn't seem to be another)

Athens is a small town, about an hour from Atlanta, hosting a huge school (University of Georgia) and as a result has a quaint, "old southern town meets hip college crowd" vibe to it. Downtown is, ohhh... maybe 5 streets by 10, and is chock full of coffee houses, bars, cheap college-y food joints, fantastic dance and music clubs (Athens has an amazing musical history - and not all of it is centered around R.E.M.), and as many hip dorm room deco kitsch stores that you can shake your parent's money at.

One of these downtown stores is Wuxtry Records, a fantastic record store in the classic sense; their racks of CD's are matched by racks of LP's. It has that great old record store smell... and they have a ton of Athens music memorabilia. I often think about it and wonder how much its changed (or will change) as music inevitably marches towards the digital.

If you go around to the side of Wuxtry, and climb a foreboding set of stairs, you come face to face with the entrance to Bizarro Wuxtry.

If you choose to enter, prepare to have your mind blown.

For me to describe Bizarro Wuxtry would utterly fail to do it justice. It's a three room, nine shades circus of pure awesomeness. Every horizontal surface is covered with vintage pop-culture detritus, as are the vertical ones - old comics literally cover the walls, fighting for space with vintage toys and game pieces that make you yell, "Holy Shit! I remember that from when I was a kid!" Everything seems to be at least 30 years old. You could easily go into an epileptic seizure from the awesomeness overload. It's like your fantasy attic. It's like H.R. Puffinstuff exploded. It's the store you want to own. And play with. Be buried in.

One of the great things about Bizarro Wuxtry is that it doesn't even pretend to be kid friendly. From its inaccessibility, its huge selection of fantastic but adult books on the top shelf, to its "things all over the fuckin' place" attic-like feel, Bizarro is a serious comic store for serious comic people. The (and I hate this term) indy comic to mainstream comic ratio is amazingly high. This is the place to walk in and pick up all those comics that your typical comic store just won't order unless it's a special request ... and Bizarro orders them routinely, as they come out. Screw the latest issue of Tarot! Pick up the newest Johnny Ryan, Rene French or Jim Woodring on Wednesday!

But, and anyone who's ever set foot in Bizarro will tell you this, the greatest thing about the place is the man who runs it. Mr. Devlin Thompson was born to in turn give birth to this beast. The place is an extension of him. Besides having exquisite taste in all things wonderful, and being a really great guy in general, Devlin is a very gifted arti... I almost said artist, but that's only halfway right (though he is that). Devlin is one of the best natural Designers I've ever met. He makes concepts, ideas, ...things.. well, work. And he has a vast, glorious imagination. The store is representative of this - ever changing, always... well, Bizarro!. And, with a store like this, it is a necessity that you know your customers - just how many copies of Acme or Eightball will you actually sell, really? I'm amazed to this day that he could nail down the ordering of such an eclectic (and rotating - college town, remember?) customer base, but I believe part of it was he just ordered what was good, knew his customers, and told them about things he knew they'd like. He turned me on to more of my favorite artists and writers than I can ever name here. I loved chatting with this man, and anytime he came up to me with a "Hey, Dave ... check this out..." you knew you were going to see something extra special.

Devlin was definitely one of those kids that's been continuously drawing since he was a wee one, and fortunately for us, he had the good fortune to get a hold of those early scratchings. He currently maintains a blog (link added to the right) where he shares all those childhood drawings.. and it's awesome! Who wouldn't want to go through their own early kidworks? Go have a laugh.

God, I miss that place. I spent more time there than I did in bars while finishing college. And that's saying something.

Bizarro Wuxtry is even kinda-sorta famous in the comic circles because of a 1994 visit from Peter Bagge and Dan Clowes. Ol' Pee-Bag himself describes it:

I thought this was so spiffy that I had Devlin sign my copy:

Gonna cash that in one day!

If you're ever in Athens, GA - make sure you visit The Planet's Greatest Comic Shop: Bizarro Wuxtry - 225 College Ave. And tell Devlin I said "Hi!"

(..and if you happen to read this one day, Devlin ... Hiya, Ya grungy long-haired, old T-shirt, bearded, sandal-wearing bastard, Yas! Oh, and thanks for everything!)

Greatest Team-Ups Ever

Tell me this idea wouldn't rock. In some strange universal DC cross-over event thingee. Somewhere where wacky fun and hard-core violence collide...

I am teh smart
Click to biggify. Really, this time. Honest.

I'm going to let this one lie right there. But no one alive can deny that a Jonah Hex / Ambush Bug team up would be Nine Shades of Awesome.

Seriously.

EDIT: I just noticed that clicking the image doesn't make it all that much bigger. I'm a dummy. I can't fix it while I'm at work, but if you open it with Windows picture viewer, the zoom works pretty well. I'll fix it later tonight.

EDIT x2: Seems I didn't have Photobucket's uploading options set to allow big pics. Fixed it. Now with big clicky image goodness!

EDIT x3: Sorry, but adding the antennas was just too funny to pass up. I should've thought of it earlier. But I'm slow like that. Takes me an hour to cook Minute Rice, y'know...

On Topic Weekend: Superfriends

I love my TiVo. Mr. TiVo. I love it so much, that being a computer guy and all, I've hacked the crap out of it. It's tied into my home network, I can watch any computer vids through it, burn anything it records to DVD (menus are fun to make!), whatever. You name it, I can do it with Mr. lovely, lovely TiVo. I've also jacked up the hard drives' (and added an extra one) so that I have close to 1 Tb of space.

That's 1000 gig's of TV recording space baby! I had to install an extra fan on the sucker to deal with the heat issues. Geek, me.

So, I can be pretty liberal with what I let Mr. TiVo record. I'll thumbs-up anything that looks remotely interesting and sort it out later. I really don't watch live TV anymore, except for news and a few remarkable shows that I can't wait to watch later - like Heroes, for example. Heroes is Nine Shades of Awesome. And if you don't know that, you're a poopy-head, Mr. Poopy-head.

Anyway, on weekends I traditionally play catch-up and go through all those things Mr. TiVo has recorded. Today during breakfast, I watched a few episodes of Superfriends that it recorded automatically off of Boomerang for me because Mr. TiVo knows my recording habits by now, and it love-es me.

A few points, while I'm watching (real-time post!):

- When the Legion of Doom's opening scene of someone standing up and taking the floor with the latest "I have a cunning plan on how we can finally defeat the Super-Friends!" starts with ... Solomon Grundy .... Yeah, you got problems there, "Super" villains.

- When that same plan Solomon Grundy proposes eventually leads to space travel, time distortions, black holes, and dimensional rifts ... I'm OK with that. Thank you for my surreal breakfast moment!

- Brainiac needs pants.

- Of Hawkman, Black Lightning, and Wonder Woman, guess who's the only one wearing a space helmet. Nope - it's Wonder Woman. What th'?

- There is no "Eye of the Storm" in a black hole. There is however, a rocket in my pocket.

- Toyman is a dick.

- The Riddler is nothing but a useless plot device. Tell me how: "When the earth was young, it was only a trickle /// better solve this fast, or friends won't be worth a nickel!" leads the Batman to the Grand Canyon? Yeah, he's the Goddamn Batman, I get it.

- When you actually lure the Superfriends to the Grand Canyon, thanks to Riddler's brilliant bait-and-switch, and they send Superman, Batman, Robin, Aquaman, Green Lantern, Flash, Samurai, and Apache Chief, don't counter with Captain Cold and Scarecrow. You're not representin', yo! I'm jus' sayin'...

- Aquaman gets them out of the Grand Canyon trap. Aquaman. Seriously.

- Paraphrasing Riddler: "You'd better tighten your belt /// or the heat will make you melt!" Constellation Orion? Yeah, first thing I thought of too.

- Toyman (dick) is hovering above Hawkman, Wonder Woman, and Black Lightning taunting them. If only one or ALL of them could fly and get to him!

- OK, umm... the whole "Citizens of Earth! We have captured the Superfriends! Send all the money in your national banks to the international airport, Care of: THE LEGION OF DOOM!!" thing.. yeah. Good luck with that.

- Green Lantern: "Only the power of Superman and myself can succeed in this mission!" Everybody else: "Dick."

- Legion of Doom defeated, buried under tons of airport rubble. Brainiac: "You forgot about my cloaking device!" They disappear. Umm.. I bet I could still find them. And I don't even have Super-hearing (vision, smell, et all), Super-Speed, a magic lasso, a power ring, or uber-detective skills.

- Batman's exiting taunt to Riddler: "What has 13 heads, belongs in a cage /// won't learn its lessons, and gets worse with age?" Riddler's disembodied voice: "Umm.. I give up!"

What!?! ... What!?!

Riddler: Dumbass

Edit: Riddler verse slashies look too much like italic I's. Fixed.

Acquired: Hitman #18

Price: $3.50
Where: The Paperback Place, Boise, ID

This one was on the list just in case I hapen to find it in a cheap bin somewhere, and it's been on the list for a long time. I eventually decided that I'd searched the cheapies long enough and that I should just buy it already. $3.50's not too bad...

Beware, Evil-doers!

Writer: Garth Ennis
Artist: John McCrea

To say this was a serious issue of Hitman would be stretching the truth. To say the least. To also say that this is Ennis at his absurd best would also not quite ring true. Even taking into account that this is issue 4 of a 6-part arc, the plot's all over the place. It jumps from The Demon rising from Hell, to the Hitman having one of those John Constantine stand-offs with his mates, to a bunch of D-listers getting the old team back together, to some spider-demon thingy rampaging the streets of Idaho, to a last page reveal that really isn't anything even halfway surprising. The art's a bit too cartoony for my liking - especally when it has to jump from comedy to suspense to spooky and back again. In another book, I'd probably dig this style, but when you have to deal with Hitman, The Demon, Jason Blood, Hell and all that... it's a bit too goofy to take the parts that are meant to be serious, well, seriously. Quite honestly, this issue only has one thing going for it.

But that one thing ... Holy Screaming Cats, Batman!!:

FREAK OUT!
The Dogwelder. The Freckin' Dogwelder. The Sam-Scratch, Mother-Farkin', Freak Your Ass Out NOW Dogwelder. AAAAGGHH!

The Dogwelder is nine shades of Awesome. There's no way around that... Awwwwsome! I mean, the dude welds dogs to people's faces! Holy Shipdip, Groo! That's fantastic! Brutalizing a woman? Dog to the face! Bank robbery? Dog to the face! Caught littering? Dog to the face! Wrong street at the wrong time? Dog to the Face, baby!

The Dogwelder is easily the best character ever created as the result of a drunken bet between crazy Irish comic guys. As the story goes, The Dogwelder was created from a series of one-upsmanships between Steve Dillon and Garth Ennis building from who could create a dumber sounding super-hero name than "Green Lantern" (sorry, Sally). I believe Dillon came up with "dogwelder," which might have come from drunken association with "spotwelder," (ha! get it?!?) after which Ennis must have conceded. I know I would've.

Unfortunately, this is only The Dogwelder's first appearace, and he just appears long enough to get recruited back into his old team. This, of course, means that I'll be picking up Hitman #19 and #20. I must see some dogwelding in action!

Until then:

Woof!

Comics are awesome sometimes.
