New Year's Day

So, I'm married now!

It was a very fitting ceremony: funny, quick, entertaining, and surrounded by friends, family, and derby girls. The bride walked down the aisle barefoot to Mr. Blue Sky, and the preacher played his part wonderfully, reenacting the marriage scene from The Princess Bride:

Seriously. It's good to hear a large group of people erupt in laughter before the vows are officially taken. Which were, and I'm not kidding:

"Do you?"
"I do!"
"And you?"
"Yep!"
"Then, you are! Congratulations!"

The whole ceremony was under 2 minutes. Then, we had a massive party for many hours before my new bride and myself went off to spend a lovely evening away from everything.

Oh! And we got quite possibly the best, most awesomest wedding gift ever from our friend (and fellow derby ref), Rumble StilsKin, who - my god, had better be thinking about further pursuing his doodles more:

Y'know..

I know I'm really *really* late to this observation. And I know that I'm not breaching any new ground here.

And I know that I might be losing some comic geek cred by admitting that I've only seen it once. And not under the best of circumstances.

And I know I really should've scrutinized it far better and far earlier than I have. And with a better eye towards comics vs. cinema and the adaptation process that should connect them both. How both mediums are distinct and - when using each other - should take the best bits and work towards an end product that highlights the pinnacles of both.

But.. here, late tonight, while working on some homework.. I had Batman Begins on in the background. For the fist time since.. well, since I saw it in the theater!

Holy Crap! That's one fantastic movie!

Y'know... I've learned to appreciate my tendency of forgetting former life experiences and relearning the initial joy of the experience again.

But, maybe that's me.

Yep.. still here! And with a quickie post while I'm thinking about it!

Among the many, many things that have happened to me during the last few months (and, I hope to get a post to y'all about that once I get my bearings back), I ended up finishing a long-term, often procrastinated project whereby I set out to learn all about DVD burning by creating a TV compilation. Specifically, a Sci-Fi compilation.

My goal was to create a compilation of great Sci-Fi TV shows that could stand on their own merits - where you wouldn't have to know anything about the series to enjoy the episode. Some shows, like Twilight Zone and Futurama, were an easy fit. Others, like BSG, Babylon 5, and Farscape, were a bit troublesome for single episode understating. But - I tried to find that one episode - probably not the *best* episode, mind you - that would impress a virgin viewer. Stand alone stuff. It would serve as a great introduction to friends and family for shows they just might like to peruse further.

And it would make a great holiday gift. I'm cheap that way.

So - just to post it here ('cause, heck.. I should probably post *anything* at this point), here's the setlist. Please comment your disapproval. Teh internets are funnay that way.

As if everything else wasn't going on... the internet connection I have here at home is bad enough that I have several technicians from the main branch of my local provider out here to examine the problem. It's like an extra geeky episode of House. Current theory is that it's a bandwith limitation problem, but I told them that my pr0n is on the unshared network. Even showed them. Twice. Now they won't leave.

Derby Day - Special BIG TIME LIVE Edition (Now - Ongoing!)

Tonight, the Treasure Valley Roller Girls are bouting in the biggest venue they've ever been in. See, the Idaho Stampede (NBA affiliate) has worked a deal with them to cross-promote and allow the girls to use the Idaho Qwest Arena for a one time, see-how-it-goes bout during a prime-time weekday. Needless to say, everyone's more than excited ... and more than a little nervous!

This is a huge venue (well, huge for Boise, anyway), and we're really not expecting to come close to filling it up - but any halfway decent showing will have massive ramifications on the future of Roller Derby in the area. I expect my Tivo to pick up all sorts of local broadcasts tonight with colorful news segments featuring the on-the-spot girly reporter trying to skate in a circle before jokingly being "hit" by an actual TVR girl, "*Ouch!* Well, it's really harder than it looks.. back to you, Bob!"

Anyway, as head scorekeeper, I'll be dealing with the jumbotron and the logistics of adapting it to roller derby scoring nomenclature. And on actually working it properly. I'm sure it'll be a mess. Derby scoring is more constant than even basketball, and it takes a lot of communication with the officials to make it work smoothly. There are often corrections, too.. something you never like to see on a live scoreboard.

Well, it's sure to be an experience, at any rate... Oh! And a bonus of having such a large media machine behind this bout... You get to watch it!

That's right.. tune in here at 7pm Mountain (9pm Eastern) and watch a live streaming broadcast of a Treasure Valley Roller Derby bout! You'll certainly see the Roller Girl at some point.. and, if you're lucky and I'm actually on the floor, maybe even me!

EDIT: I really can't believe it, but almost a month after the event, the above stream still works. So, if you're curious... you can still watch the entire bout, start to finish! And... it was a squeaker! Came right down to the last jam! An exciting bout, but a real busy one for us scorekeepers.

I'm not on camera at all, but the Roller Girl gets quite a lot of play time. I'm stuck sitting behind the camera wearing a headset and logistically talking with the guy who's announcing the stream (which starts after the Nation Anthem is sung). I did get to push the big arena horn button, which was a lot more fun than I though it would be.

Oh, and that floor ... that's plastic fiber tiles set over hockey ice. Very slick to skate on. You can see the trepidation some of the girls have to work through during the first few minutes before they really get going.

Pi day, in addition to being an easy excuse to ditch the diet, is actually an annual event where the Earth's calendar syncs up to the mathematical value of π: 3.14159265.... or, March 14 at 1:59 pm. It's a day of fun, frivolity, frolicking, and delicious fruit filling!

(Actually a better pi day, a once-in-a-millennium one, will come around in 2026 or in 2015 at 9:26, but I can't wait that long for pie!)

I watched your Watchmen last night.

It's a move that I was - quite literally - waiting 20 years to see. And not see. You see, as I grew older and re-read the book over and over again (I was one of those die-hard comic geeks that made a point of reading the book every year since I was 18. Some folks read a yearly Shakespeare, some re-read Heart of Darkness or watch Citizen Kane ... me? I did Watchmen. Every year.), I became increasingly convinced that it would never translate to film very well, in spite of my first teenage impressions of how bitchin' a movie would be. Several key elements could only be captured through the unique pacing of comics - it's camera was not the theater's camera.

Jon slow internal monologue on Mars. The Laurie / Comedian reveal. The ending, by God! - that would never work on film! Veidt as smarter-than-everyone (personally, I think you missed that one). Rorschach (which Haley absolutely NAILED). The costume sex (Zack? Please. That was unnecessary. You know what I'm talking about). The alternate time period and style. The massive character development. All of the background material that fleshed out the world with a subtlety I couldn't imagine working in film.

Part of me was relieved each time a planned film version was scrapped. It made the possibility of me having another "No, really.. the comic is soooo much better than that god-awful movie!" conversation with my non-comic friends that much further away.

So, understand that I went into this thing with (I think) realistic expectations. If not completely on the bottom of the low side. I went to honor a promise I made to my 18-year old self. I was in a large group of people - a nice mix of people who were familiar with the book / extremely familiar with the book / just finished it before the movie (including the Roller Girl) / didn't know anything about it going in.

And even though I know that no film version of Watchmen would ever be a perfect match for what I thought of in my head 20 years ago when I first was reading it (and my version would certainly disappoint scores of other fans), and even though I know (indeed, expected) elements of the book would have to be changed to better fit the vehicle of film, I have to say - that as a movie taken on it's own ... with all you had to work with to give it a proper adaption... based on all of the after-movie discussions..

J.H. Williams, with an easy throw-away detail of him eating, draws one of the best Jonah Hex character moments I've seen in a while. I mean.. Euggh!

I bought a Giant-Size Jimmy Olsen in which this actually happens for only a buck. And it's not the craziest thing that happens in it. Not by a long shot.

Oh .. and we're expecting several inches of snow tonight. Contrary to popular belief, it really doesn't snow much here in Boise. Surrounding area? Yeah. In the city proper? Not so much. So.. looking forward to that.

(It's actually quite funny early in the morning when I let the dogs out to do their business after a nightly snowfall.. they run full tilt outside, then stop suddenly in the middle of the yard, look around confused then back at me with an expression like, "Did YOU do this?!?")

So, I picked up a copy of the digest version of Marvel Adventures: Hulk / Powerpack on the cheap (read: free) the other day at my LCS's anniversary sale. And, while it's no Marvel Adventures: Anything Written by Jeff Parker, it's a pretty fun li'l read. It'll make a great stocking stuffer for when the Roller Girl's li'l monster comes to visit. Why, parts of it are gosh-darn adorable....

Boy, has it ever been busy around here.. I'm having to cook for everyone this year! Well, cook everything except the turkey, anyway.

That still leaves so much to do! I have to make the potatoes, cream the corn, splinter the beans, stuff the stuffing, fix the drinks, bake the desserts, arrange the house, clean everything, and .. well, there's a *lot* of work. Li'l ol' domestic me. Jeepers!

So, I'll most likely be much too occupied to post anything new until Monday .. unless something really interesting happens. Like Apes riding Pterodactyls or something. I should be able to continue regularly posting after that, though. Hopefully.

I'd just like to mention that last night's episode of the utterly fantastic new cartoon series Batman: The Brave and the Bold was an entire story where Batman and Plastic Man teamed up to fight Gorilla Grodd and his Apes in the Savage Land to save all of the Caribbean from evolving into simian mind slaves.

And there was a scene where Batman and Plastic Man fought laser gun totin' apes riding Pterodactyls.

And at one point, Batman became BatApe.

So, yeah. They got my letter.

I am so very very impressed with this absolutely fun li'l cartoon! I dare you not to smile while watching it!

OK, you're searching for some wacky Halloween cover to make a joke about when you find one to which your (admittedly) perverted and juvenile mind can only take one way - down the bawdy path. Or, as I refer to it: "The Road Well-Traveled." So.. you go that way and add the joke's necessary ball gag and realize that because you're putting it on a pig, it really should be an apple. See, that's more of the funny. Then, when adding the tag-line joke, you similarly notice that it really should be stuttered. Triple the f-f-f-funny!

AHA! We have achieved the funny! But wait, there's more!

See, now that I'm done with it, I realize that I have a fantastic one panel joke buried here. If only I could draw. I can't. Not well, anyway. Maybe someone can.

Soup and SexyNerdGirl are in hard-core house hunting mode, which takes up a lot of our spare time, what with there being so few Crime-Stopper Headquarters on the market out here in rural Idaho. Oh, and there's a big Roller Derby bout this weekend involving our Treasure Valley Roller Girls and the Jet City Bombers from the Seattle area. The former team of SexyNerdGirl, as a matter of fact. So, there's that whole old team / new team rivalry thing going on, which means lots and lots of derby practices and meetings. Y'know.. to dish the dirt on your old teammates.

Oh, and we've just started playing Spore. Wow, is that ever a fun game! Time killer, too!

As a result, expect a very sporadic posting schedule for the next week or so. Hopefully, we can soon get everything straightened out and go back to posting Jughead covers with photoshopped boobies. Or the Goddamn Batman. Maybe both.

Derby D'oh!

Simpsons Comics came out last week in which Marge tries out for a Roller Derby team and the wacky hi-jinks that naturally ensue. It's pretty good, though they did play a little loose with how the actual game is played - at the end of the bout Marge actually crosses a finish line to win. That's weird. But for the most part, they get the idea and make it fun.

And the comic is pretty funny - which is not at all surprising being a Simpsons comic and all. Honestly, this series has been a consistently funny all-ages read from issue one. It helps that you can read the comic and hear the actual character's voices in your head. At least, that's what I do.

Anywhoo, being a Roller Derby official myself, I thought it might be nice to explain some of the sport's more obscure termanology, as helpfully illustrated by this kiddiebook.

Future Brains

So I'm re-reading Grant Morrison's Seven Soldiers series in the recommended order because, well.. it's a Grant Morrison series. I'm sure I missed something the first time around. And I mean something even more substantial than the Dalek in Batman's Sci-Fi closet.

Actually, it reads a lot better all at once this way. The issues did lap each other as they were originally released, and I admit, parts that confused me initially really solidify nicely this time around. If the whole thing left you with a "impressive writing feat... but kinda patchy" feeling back then, read it again through the trades. It's fantastic taken all together. And even more impressive.

Anyway, there's a part in Zatanna #3 where he ties the Sheeda Princess with the Snow White mythos like so:

Let's have a little fun and see what goes on on around here when we take a step back and look....

Step 1: The Beginning
Find an interesting image that has some jokey potential:

Step 2: The Setup
Open your graphics editor of choice and resize the panel to better fit Blogger's image constrictions. Reduce the complexity and sample any colors off of the image that you might be needing later.

Step 3: The Funny
Think about something funny to follow the panel. Or, something funny to replace the panel's text with. Think hard! This is the most important step! If nothing immediately leaps to mind, go play guitar or something. Eat some pie. Check on your pr0n downloads. Or find a way to work Ambush Bug or The Goddamn Batman into it. If you still can't think of anything, you can stretch out a lame joke by using several smaller steps to build up suspense. You'd be surprised how often this works!

Step 4: Edit!
Change the image for maximum hilarity! Try to work it so that the text looks original and the image looks unmanipulated!

WRONG!
Step 5: Finish!
Post and laugh! Show it to your girlfriend for extra eye-rolling goodness!

Sorry for the delay - we had a birthday party to go to. And, because it involved several Roller Girls, it kinda stretched out the night and our sobriety. So, let's pick up with a quickie Spidey Stories goof-off after a day off. Eh, you get what you pay for...

This month's villain is Mysterio, a dude I've loved ever since I was a youngin'. Something about that character design is just so... Ditko. And by extrapolation... cool. No way around it, that costume rocks. If you could pull it off, that would completely kick ass at this year's Halloween party. It'd be quite the pain to negotiate with .. and drink .. and socialize.. and.. well, anything really. So, maybe I spoke too soon. You'd probably start to look forward to the end of the night when you can finally take that damn fishbowl off your head.

But, in the all-children's world of Spider Super Stories? He wears it all the time. Check it out:
